TriMet Westside/Hillsboro

The LTK-designed train-to-wayside communication system has provided an integrated communications network for the entire system with capability to expand for future line additions. The communications systems included 30 miles of new fiber optic cable, a backbone communications network based on SONET optical networking equipment, a new central monitoring and control facility, a SCADA system for automated monitoring and control of train location and system status, closed-circuit TV surveillance, an ADA-compliant public address and variable message sign system, telephones, a three-mile tunnel radio system, and a 900 MHZ radio system coordinated with the city of Portland’s regional system.

Regional Transportation District (Denver)

TREX project is one of the largest multimodal projects in the country. The light rail component of this project is expanding the 15 route miles to 34 miles and increasing the existing 29 passenger stations to 42 stations. RTD’s data network needs are unique in that the agency has a requirement to integrate all new communications and information technology components into their existing enterprise network infrastructure. RTD will be the first transit agency to implement a Gigabit Ethernet backbone for LRT communications instead of a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) system.

LTK is providing communications project management and design support for this complex and unique integration effort. The following Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components will be integrated into the project:

  • Variable Message Signs
  • CCTV
  • Public Address Systems 

In addition to the Gigabit Ethernet and ITS components, LTK is also providing project management and design support for a new central control system, central control equipment room design, SCADA/RTUs for signaling, TPSS, and facilities, 2 new PBXs, an upgrade to RTD’s CAD/AVL system, and upgrades to the agency’s existing radio system.

Provided signal and traction power engineering for the rehabilitation of the south segment of the Green Line. The signaling and train control work included development of design to implement bi-directional signaling between 17th Street and a new 36th Street interlocking.  A design was developed for interlocking modifications to Ashland and 35th Street, along with design to re-wire an existing house for use at another location.

Provided signal design services under a blanket contract for Metra's entire commuter rail system.  Developed block layout and detailed signal circuit design to facilitate a maximum speed of 79 MPH between Tinley Park and New Lenox on the former Rock Island Lines.  Equipment applied to this project includes microprocessor based track circuits and electronic cab signal equipment.

Provided engineering services to add centralized traffic control, additional crossovers, central speed control and other improvements to the existing MUNI Metro subway signal system. Performed field engineering services for installation of wayside and carborne signal and communications equipment for control of 100 new LRVs.  Prepared the original detailed design specifications for the signal system for the Twin Peaks Tunnel, Sunset Tunnel and Market Street Subway.

Provided engineering services for the detailed design, installation, test and acceptance of the car borne ATO/ATC for 46 additional PATCO  Lindenwold Line cars.  Provided preliminary engineering and cost estimates for a signal system and communications for proposed route extensions.
