LTK offers comprehensive planning, design, cost estimating and construction management services for rail system and electric trolleybus power distribution and Overhead Contact System (OCS) installations. These installations range from trolleybus street-running networks to streetcar (both historic and modern), light rail, heavy rail metro and mainline railroad networks. Our services include design of third rail systems, OCS layouts, sectioning, cable and conduit routing, overhead wire profiling and support, load calculations, and equipment specifications.
With many projects involving historic neighborhoods and downtown transit malls, LTK is well-known for minimizing the visual intrusiveness of the OCS while delivering reliable, maintainable, and cost-effective designs. We balance the needs for supporting the highest possible operating speed and robust power capacity with the need to minimize wire profiles and the number of supporting poles, guy wires and other components that can have great visual impact.
Our work includes trolley wire installations for streetcar and downtown light rail systems as well as fixed tension and constant tension catenary systems for higher speed running. In addition to site-specific designs of OCS layouts, we develop designs and specifications for all applicable OCS components, including poles/masts, cantilevers, wires, hangers, clamps, insulators, steady arms, knuckles, brackets and terminations. Our powerful computer simulation applications can inform trade-off decisions with respect to third rail sections or OCS wire size, voltage drops and substation spacing/location decisions.
LTK also assists rail operators in testing and commissioning OCS installations. This includes evaluation of OCS and third rail layouts, components and hardware, system parameters and operating procedures, and related traction power equipment. LTK also supports the commissioning process through development of maintenance procedures and operating protocols as they relate to third rail and OCS inspection, repair and replacement.
